Matteo Jorgenson's Near Miss: Faun Drome Classic 2026 Highlights & Analysis (2026)

So close, yet so far! Matteo Jorgenson narrowly missed out on a coveted victory in the Faun Drome Classic, a frustrating repeat of his near-miss the previous day.

This past Sunday, American cyclist Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma - Lease a Bike) found himself in the runner-up position at the Faun Drome Classic, just a hair's breadth away from claiming the top spot. This second-place finish comes on the heels of a fourth-place performance on Saturday, marking a consistent display of strong racing but a continued search for that elusive win.

But here's where it gets particularly poignant: It was the second consecutive day Jorgenson was bested by a prodigious young French talent. On Saturday, in the Faun-Ardèche Classic, he was outmaneuvered by the exceptionally gifted 19-year-old Paul Seixas. The sting of that loss was compounded when Jorgenson was subsequently outsprinted for second place by Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious).

While Seixas wasn't in the mix on Sunday, Jorgenson showcased an even sharper form in what was only his second outing of the year. He's clearly on an upward trajectory, with his first victory of the new season feeling increasingly within reach.

"Second place is obviously not what I came for," Jorgenson admitted after the race, "but today I was beaten by a better sprinter." He elaborated on the team's strong tactical execution, noting, "Tactically, we rode a strong race as a team. At one point we had four riders in the lead group in the finale. That numerical advantage allowed me to accelerate at the right moment, but unfortunately I just missed out on the win."

Going for glory: As the race approached its climax, both Jorgenson and eventual winner Romain Grégoire (Groupama – FDJ United) demonstrated remarkable strength. They managed to break away on a gentle descent with just 17 kilometers left to the finish line in Étoile-sur-Rhône. Their escape was a tense affair, as they first had to fend off a determined chase from US national champion Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) and Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda (Movistar Team). Later, they had to contend with a solo pursuit from Benoît Cosnefroy (UAE Emirates-XRG).

Cosnefroy was finally caught with only 3 kilometers to go, and the peloton began to close in with alarming speed. The main bunch was so close that they almost caught the leaders on the final climb, just 500 meters from the finish.

And this is the part most people miss... While Martinez made a valiant late surge, he too came up just short in the final sprint to the line. Grégoire, seizing the opportune moment, launched his uphill sprint with approximately 200 meters remaining and proved to have the superior kick, crossing the finish line a couple of lengths ahead of Jorgenson.

This outcome represents another "French frustration" for the American rider. However, his current form suggests a major win is on the horizon. He's slated to compete in the Strade Bianche next Saturday, followed by Tirreno Adriatico.

"I'm happy with my form and the feeling in my first two races of the season," Jorgenson stated. "It's great to be on the podium right away. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Italian races on my schedule."
